Evaluations
Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation (FEES)
This is an instrumental swallowing assessment in which a flexible endoscope is passed through the nose to provide a direct view of the throat and larynx during swallowing. The speech-language pathologist evaluates the anatomy and physiology of the swallow, identifies penetration or aspiration, assesses secretion management, and determines the safest diet textures and effective swallowing strategies without the use of radiation.
Modified Barium Swallow (MBS)
This is an instrumental swallowing evaluation that uses real-time X-ray imaging to assess how food and liquids move through the mouth, throat, and upper esophagus. During the exam, the patient consumes foods and liquids mixed with barium so the speech-language pathologist and radiologist can identify swallowing impairments, detect aspiration or penetration, and determine the safest diet textures and effective swallowing strategies.
